Sep. 2nd, 2005 02:54 pmI am not directly affected by the hurricane. I don't live in NOLA. I'd
like to say I am shocked by the bad response/lack of response from the
federal gvt. But I can't say that.
I've been reading so much on LJ and reading news articles online and watching CNN since it hit and I can't watch TV anymore. I can barely stand reading it. LJers are giving and posting links of where to give and yes that's all good. That's very good. I just sit here scared for the people I do know in those areas and have not heard from. An exbf of mine from NOLA got out. He ended up in Houston early monday moring with little money and no place to stay. He's now sleeping on my daughter's couch. He has no idea if his parents got out or not. He had some ID and his resume on a diskette so now he is out applying for work, since he knows he won't be able to go back anytime soon and he wants to take care of himself and help my daughter out financially while she puts him up. He also tells me he's one of the lucky ones, he'd just got paid and had the cash to drive and knew if nothing else he coulda kept coming to Austin to my place.
Roomie was supposed to be home last night. He called and said they were keeping him overnight in Houston and he'd be going to San Antonio from there. Turns out they had a reason. Last night he was delivering stuff to the Astrodome that his office there had purchased for the refugees, and when he left this morning he had not a single tool in his van. It was loaded with more for the SA arena where there are more refugees. This is private citizens doing what they think is right, what they know is right. Giving a helping hand.
The queation that keeps crossing my mind here is where will they go in the weeks ahead? NOLA will not be inhabitable any time soon. And keeping them in sports arenas is a stopgap at best. That's a temporary solution to a problem that appears as if it will be long term. The exbf has the right of it when he says he has to find work so he can pull his own weight. He managed to get his parrot out and got his neighbor's cat too. He doesn't know what happened to his neighbor but he got their cat who was outside when he went. So what will we do? As the richest nation in the world we should be able to help our own. We really should. Right now we are concentrating on the worst of it, as we should but we need to start thinking longer term also. There are people in MS and NOLA who are effectively homeless because of this. Either their houses are under water or their houses are matchsticks we need to start thinking about that future.
The cleaning up of NOLA and the rebuilding will take yrs. Yrs after the current prick in the White House has left we will still be dealing with the decisions and lack of funding he created in his administration. I almost wish we could try him for public incompetence and seixe his assets to pay for this. And yeah where the hell is Cheney in all of this? He's been scarce for awhile here. Never mind his cronies they're all hiding out too. None of them want to be tainted by this but damn. Yes I am infuriated and others have made my points better than I could. But I had to say it. Just had to.
