Fic Rec

Every so often I read a piece of fanfic that just makes me think 'now that's how it should be done'.  Star Trek had some awesome fiction back in the day and one that I just spent two days rereading pretty much shows what worldbuilding should be.  D'Alaire was/is a writer in the Voyager fandom who created some very well done backstories for some of the characters in the show and has writing skills that would put the BNF Cassie Claire to shame.  If a fanfic writer should've gotten a pro contract it is her.   Her magnum opus as it were is a piece called 'The Word Painter' where she strands 4 of the characters from the show in a very different world and shows their lives there through the words of an elderly woman when the ship attempts to retrieve them.  She creates a universe and a world that is eminently believable and characters within it that are recognizably the stranded crew who live there and change there in the time spent there.  This story is very long and won major awards within the Trek fandom at the time it was published.  I remember actually downloading it to read it offline as I was on a dialup connection at the time and could not in good conscience tie up the phone line while reading it.  She was and is a P/T(Paris/Torres) shipper and they were the main characters of this fic.  She took them in directions that the PTB would never have taken them but they were recognizably those two characters.  All of her fic is located at her webpage and all of it worth reading because even if you aren't familiar with Voyager the writing is just that good. I am linking the one story I mention in particular here because it is I think her best. Enjoy!
