So the bad_penny comm over on JF has a new expose going. I love how fandom history is being told over there. This time it's Cassandra Claire and her plagiarism in the Draco Trilogy. She just finished it and posted the last bit yesterday so this coming out now seems like interesting timing. CC has announced she will be taking the DT off the web in the near future so if you want to read it, download now while it still exists. I have no intention of reading it because ... Draco is not a character I liked in canon and fanon Draco has never done much for me at all. I like my Draco in SMALL doses yo.
So that said I have not read DT nor do I intend to. I have read the expose as it is posted and find myself wondering if CC attended any college at all and if so did she snooze through the classes on ethics and such. Because she most certainly did plagiarise. I am not talking about the stuff she tossed in from Buffy the witty one liners and such. I am talking about the whole sale lifting of passages from Pamela Dean. lexin they DO post disclaimers to the effect that yes if you recognise a line from Buffy or LA Law or something it's there because I liked it and it worked here. lexin did it in several of her fics and she has always put in a disclaimer to the effect yes she is using other sources and these are those sources. CC has not always done so and has taken elements not only from pop culture but from Zelazny's 'Amber' series which hacks me off as it was a favorite and she DIDN'T credit it. And lifting passages wholesale from another writer's published work is theft or plagiarism which is a nicer word for it. So folks more entertainment and history from bad_penny. The link is here.
